The Sultan of Swat started as pitcher for the Boston Red Sox in 1914. Babe Ruth was a star left handed pitcher who amazed crowds by his ability to hit long home runs in a dead ball era. This convinced Red Sox management to let him convert to an everyday player in 1919. Playing everyday Babe Ruth broke the MLB Home Run record in 1919. After the season he was traded to the New York Yankees. Many believe this put a curse on the Boston Red Sox that lasted 86 years. After a rough first month with the Yankees, Babe Ruth's bat started to heat up. On May 1st, 1920 Babe Ruth became the second player to hit a home run out of the Polo Grounds in a game vs the Red Sox. This led to a 11 home run month in May and a 13 home run month in June and the legend was born.
